Organizing: From Chaos to Clean

I like organizing spaces and things. I don’t always do it, and sometimes my own work space is a complete mess. But I like making it organized. I like the feeling of knowing that there’s space between things and space around things. Besides that, having an organized space allows me to feel like I have a clearer mental space for clear thinking.

I wasn’t always this way. When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me how messy my room was. What kid didn’t have a messy room at various times in their childhood, right? My room was definitely a bit of chaos at times, but I did like it when the bed was made, things were put away, and it became a calming place to hang out.

I am definitely that way when it comes to intellectual matters. I like to have the files on my computer organized well. If my desktop becomes too cluttered with miscellaneous files that I’ve downloaded or moved or saved there, I have to stop the presses and get it cleaned up. And my house. What does my house look like? Well, it seems the bigger the space, the bigger the challenge! In recent years, I’ve found it very useful to discard, give away, throw away a lot of extra stuff. Paring down is a good thing!

I have a favorite book which really helped me put this in perspective some years ago. Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui is a great little book to help you think through clearing your own messy place. Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of other such clutter clearing books which can be helpful if you’re looking for this kind of help with your own life.
